Private Dance Instruction Process

Your Path to Dancing Confidence

We start with a consultation to understand your goals, timeline, and current experience level. Whether you’re complete beginners or have some dance background, we’ll create a plan that works for you.

During your first lesson, we’ll teach you basic steps and help you feel comfortable moving together. Each session builds on the previous one, adding new moves and refining your technique until you feel confident and natural.

For wedding couples, we’ll work with your chosen song to create custom choreography that reflects your personality. We’ll practice until you feel ready to shine on your special day, with backup plans for any last-minute nerves.

Complete Wedding Dance Preparation

Our wedding dance packages include everything you need for a memorable first dance. We’ll create custom choreography for your chosen song, teach you the steps at your pace, and provide practice sessions until you feel completely confident.

Many Shelter Island couples choose us because we understand the pressure of performing in front of family and friends. We’ll prepare you for common scenarios like different floor surfaces, dress restrictions, and even what to do if you forget a step.

Beyond the first dance, we can also prepare you for parent dances, anniversary celebrations, and other special moments. Our goal is making sure you feel confident and look great on your most important day.

How many lessons do we need for our wedding dance?

Most couples need 4-6 private lessons to feel confident with their wedding dance, but it depends on your goals and experience level. If you want a simple, elegant dance that looks polished, 4 lessons is usually enough.

For more elaborate choreography or if you’re starting as complete beginners, 6-8 lessons gives you time to really master the moves and feel natural. We’ll assess your progress after the first lesson and give you a realistic timeline.

The key is starting early enough that you’re not stressed. We recommend beginning lessons 2-3 months before your wedding so you have time to practice and feel confident.

Absolutely. Most of our students start with zero dance experience, and that’s perfectly fine. We specialize in teaching beginners and making them feel comfortable from the very first lesson.

We break down every move into simple steps and teach at your pace. There’s no judgment here – we’ve seen it all, and everyone starts somewhere. Our job is making sure you feel supported and confident as you learn.

Many of our most confident dancers started as complete beginners who were nervous about their first lesson. Within a few sessions, they’re surprised by how much they’ve learned and how natural dancing starts to feel.

We teach all the popular wedding dance styles including Waltz, Foxtrot, Swing, Rumba, and contemporary slow dancing. The style we recommend depends on your music choice and comfort level.

For traditional wedding songs, a classic Waltz or Foxtrot works beautifully. If you have a more modern song, we might suggest a contemporary slow dance or even incorporate some fun spins and dips that look impressive but aren’t too difficult.

During your consultation, we’ll listen to your song and discuss what style would work best. We can also show you different options so you can choose what feels right for your personality and wedding style.

We recommend starting 8-12 weeks before your wedding date. This gives you plenty of time to learn without feeling rushed, plus time to practice on your own between lessons.

Starting too early can actually work against you – you might forget steps if there’s too much time between lessons and your wedding. But starting too late creates unnecessary stress during an already busy time.

If your wedding is coming up soon, don’t worry. We’ve successfully prepared couples with just 2-3 weeks notice. We’ll work with your timeline and focus on creating something beautiful that you can master in the time available.

Yes, we offer both group classes and private lessons. Group classes are a fun way to learn social dancing and meet other people who enjoy dancing. They’re perfect if you want to learn multiple dance styles or continue dancing after your wedding.

Our group classes cover popular social dances like Swing, Salsa, and Ballroom basics. The atmosphere is relaxed and social, and you don’t need to bring a partner – we rotate partners during class.

For wedding preparation, most couples prefer private lessons because we can focus specifically on your song and create custom choreography. But many couples join group classes after their wedding to continue dancing together.

Wear comfortable clothes that let you move freely. For women, a skirt or dress that’s similar to your wedding dress length helps you practice with the right restrictions. Avoid jeans or anything too tight.

For shoes, bring something with a smooth sole that you can pivot in. Ladies should practice in heels similar to what you’ll wear at your wedding, even if they’re lower than your actual wedding shoes.

Don’t worry about special dance shoes for your first few lessons. We want you to be comfortable while you’re learning. As you progress, we can recommend specific shoes if you decide to continue dancing after your wedding.
